It is what it is

I’ve got a phrase I’ve used my whole life: “It is what it is.”

I know it drives a lot of people nuts. People who’ve come and gone from my life have called it dismissive or lazy, but they don’t get why it’s in my vocabulary. I don’t say it because I’m passive; I say it because of the endless pile of absolute garbage life loves to hand me. When you get dealt the bad hand over and over, at some point, acknowledging the reality of the situation is the only way to keep moving forward.

If I’m being completely honest, what burns me up most in this world is people. Specifically:

  • The fakes: People who can’t be honest and spend all their energy blowing smoke up your ass.
  • The selfish: People who genuinely don’t give a damn about anyone or anything outside of themselves.

For whatever reason, that pile of trash life throws my way always seems to be packed with those exact types. I don’t know why the universe keeps pairing me with dishonest, self-centered people, but it does.

So yeah, I say it. Because at the end of the day, acknowledging the mess for what it actually is—without sugarcoating it—is the only way to deal with it. It is what it is.
